Africa is the second largest continent in size and also the second most populous continent on the surface of the earth. Over 20% of the total land surface on the earth is occupied by Africa. It is an exotic location with large areas of land which is unpopulated. Romans termed the continent “Africa Terra”, which later on evolved into Africa.
Africa is a continent of extremes, right from Sahara Desert to Mount Kilimanjaro. Africa has areas which are full of natural resources and also areas which are barren.
It is the home of 12% of the total human population on earth which has made it the second most populous continent. The largest city in Africa is Cairo and it has over nine million inhabitants. Sudan is the largest country in this continent. Africa has an 18,950 miles long coastline. Nile is the longest river with its length over 4,150 miles. It is also the longest river in the world. Nile is fed by Africa’s largest lake, Lake Victoria. Mount Kilimanjaro is the largest mountain standing tall over 19,317 thousand feet. The Sahara desert of Africa is the largest desert of the world.
Africa is a land filled with natural resources. It has 8% of the world’s oil reserve and also produces 50% of the gold and diamonds in the world.
Although Africa is the second largest continent and is gifted with the natural resources, it is currently considered to be the poorest continent on Earth.
